Ramping 2005
Ramping 2005.
The spring has been cold. A brief warm spell brought the ramps out, only to be covered with a late April snow storm.
The Ramp supper in Helvetia is on the latest possible date this year. Rather than being warm and welcoming, the weather is cold and forboding, much like the climate in nations capital.

I headed south from da burgh late today, about 4:30. Arriving through the misty fog about 7:45pm I inquired if there was any food left. "No ramps, but everything else-- $7. Good enough for me. I ate with a nice family from Mabie then headed out and about town. After finding complete strangers at the BeeKeeper I finally located Dan in the bunkroom above the Hutte. We're now heading to the dance, hoping to see MJ and Bill and Lisa (MJ's neighbor) who are staying at the upscale B&B, Uncle John's. Later, back here to Rogers' for some music.

The Raffoon family came to the North American centuries ago with a land grant from King Phillip.
Saturday April 30th:
I has rained in Helvetia since the morning. Because the last saturday of the month is late this year, Helvetia is the only ramp supper around. The line was huge, inspite of the rain. They ran out of ramps about 6:30, but continued serving until 8.
The coleslaw was not as good as Margaret passed on last year. But the soup beans were outstanding. I thought the ramps were mild, but others thought they were stronger than ususal. I think it is because many of the ramps were young and could have waited to be picked a bit.
It has been a tough year for the ramps. They came up late due to the cold and then got hit with 8 or more inches of snow last week.
Sunday- Got up and tried to go on a short run out the Czar but only went two miles and turned around, heading back to the Hutte to have breakfast with Dan. After that we went up to Papa John's and joined Lynn, MJ, and Bill at their breakfast. Then we toured Sandy's farm, got some rabbits, saw the new calf, looked at the cheese house, and tried to feed the llamas. It was a beautiful day.
